Timber Sleeper Walls

Timber sleeper retaining walls.

Timber still has a place — mostly on lower garden retaining where the look suits the yard and the load is modest.

Where timber works

Garden beds, terraced sections, low steps and yard levels where the wall isn't carrying serious load and access makes heavier materials impractical.

  • Garden bed retaining
  • Low terracing and steps
  • Tight access where machinery can't get in
  • Matching existing timber landscaping

Being straight about lifespan

Timber in constant contact with wet soil breaks down from the back first. That's why a timber wall can look fine from the front and be well gone behind it.

Drainage and the right treatment level extend the life of a timber wall considerably, but it will not last as long as a well-built concrete sleeper wall on the same site.

What we won't do

We won't put timber into a situation it isn't suited to just because it's cheaper on the day. If the wall is holding a driveway, real height, or ground with load behind it, we'll say so and price a system that suits.

Replacing an old timber wall

If your existing timber wall is leaning, rotting or letting soil through, the question is usually replacement rather than repair. We remove the old wall, deal with the failed backfill, and rebuild with drainage that gives the new wall a chance.

Photos of the wall and surrounding ground can tell us a lot before we call.

Send through a couple of photos and we'll get a better idea of the site.
