Retaining Wall Construction

Retaining walls in Wollongong.

New retaining walls for residential sites across Wollongong and the surrounding Illawarra — built around what the ground is actually doing, not just what looks good from the front.

What the wall is holding comes first

Before we talk materials, we work out what the wall is retaining. Garden soil behind a low terrace is a very different job to cut ground under a driveway or a boundary change with a shed sitting close behind it.

That's what sets height, footing depth, post spacing and drainage. We'll work out what the ground is doing before recommending the wall.

  • Garden beds and yard terracing
  • Cut ground on sloping blocks
  • Driveway and parking levels
  • Boundary and fence line changes
  • Raised or levelled yard areas
  • Reinstating failed retaining

Materials we build with

Concrete sleepers with galvanised posts suit a lot of Illawarra sites. Timber sleepers still have a place on lower garden work. Block systems work well where the look matters and the site suits them. The right choice depends on height, load, access and budget.

Excavation and site preparation

Some sites need excavation before the wall can be properly rebuilt. That might be cutting a bench for the wall line, digging post holes to the required depth, or removing failed backfill that's holding water.

Access dictates a lot here — what machinery we can get into the yard changes how the job runs.

Drainage as part of the build

Drainage behind the wall matters just as much as what you see from the front. Aggregate, ag pipe where appropriate and an outlet that actually discharges somewhere sensible are part of building the wall, not an optional extra.

Engineering and approvals

Some retaining walls need engineering or approval. It depends on height, load above the wall, proximity to boundaries and structures, and the planning controls that apply to the property. We'll identify that early rather than pretending every wall is the same.

Photos of the wall and surrounding ground can tell us a lot before we call.

Send through a couple of photos and we'll get a better idea of the site.
